Vigilante Game Seventeen: Let's Make a Deal
Small update: sad news is that we have lost Justin as our DM. The great news is that Gareth who covered for us early on has stepped up as our full-time DM!
Following the fall of the Ocrait city and the disaster that was the Masquerade, Lady Erochnein approached where MED had decided to make camp near the fallen Ocrait City. MED greeted her in all of their usual ways, Martin was rude, June excited, Ereden too much of a suck up, etc. She was there to give us a mission. A damn new mission! The day after we brought down a city for her! Man, she continued to be full of herself. But being adventurers, of course, we accepted her offer. She wanted to know more about how the city was able to fly and how the shield was created. But first, she needed to make sure the city was cleared out of anything that would cause her researchers harm. That is where we come in, go to the city and clear out any remnants of Ocrait or other threats.
We returned to the still smoldering city. Landing on the crystal platform we landed the city with. A new blue dome could be seen surrounding the center crystal structure. That… had not been there the night before. We head back to where the center console had been before we destroyed it. Outside of the massive blue dome, we encountered several Ocrait Wizards who had returned. They saw us and instantly surrendered. They let us know that the dome was to protect the center of the city. If it had been destroyed then the power left inside could have gotten loose. If something isn’t done soon the whole city will explode from the leaks that were already occurring. We pass through the dome, with a sudden burst of power the world freezes, the fire stops moving, the shaking stops. The whole central core has been encased within a time stop. We figured the console was the best place to start. And as luck would have it we found stair leading down!
June: “It’s always a down tower.”
Descending the stairs we soon became very aware of a large amount of heat coming from beneath us. In our minds, we all hear a scream and then laughter followed by silence. “Oh great… a Demon.”
As we continued down the stairs colors, distance, everything around us seems to be distorting and altering the closer we got to the bottom of the stairs, the closer we came to what was clearly the power source or core of the city.
June: “Magic is dicks.” A truer statement has never been said.
We found a door encased in magic of some kind at the bottom of the stairs. Martin walked up to it and did his classic “Knock” and the door exploded. This time not inwards but outwards as fire erupted around him scorching his clothes.
Martin: “Yes June, Magic is dicks.”
Inside the room, a large summoning circle covered the floor. Martin tapping his new fancy hat from Lady Erochnein used to identify and a single word appeared in his head. Saying it immediately, four elementals appeared in front of him. Martin just summoned help by accident. Neat. A voice again appears in the heads of MED, “Come and join me. I will soon be free anyway!”
MED proceeded across the summoning room to another doorway. Leading further down, inside they found a staircase covered in standard weapons. Moving down the stairs the party stepped onto several runes without realizing it, triggering several green flaming elementals to appear. A quick battle ensues and the stairs collapse sending Martin and Ereden falling. Luckily for them, Ereden had brought Leeroy Jenkins who saved them just before they hit the ground. Martin and June dispatch the elementals each claiming a kill for their game. Fire covers the room they landed in like a liquid. “Ew gross” - June as she passes through the fire.
Walking through an archway we found more orbs pulsating with magic. The floor is covered with a shattered green glass. A large orb in the center of the room was cracked and it excreted green slime and billowed fire. The voice could be heard again, “I will destroy you and then claim my freedom.”
Martin: “Or and here me out here, we could make a deal.”
MED: “What?!” “NO!” “Martin what are you doing?!”
Ereden continued to explore the room. He found a control board but didn’t completely understand it. He started flipping switches in the hope of containing the demon. A large green fire elemental suddenly appeared behind MED.
Martin: “So is that a no?”
Demon: “My avatar will be more than enough to defeat you!”
The party starts destroying the demons avatar without much effort. Ereden continuing to press buttons causes several Imps to appear which he counterspells their summoning. And finally hits one which causes runes of protection to flare up around the demons circle. The power being released actually seems to increase when this happens.
Demon: “You will all die with me then!”
Martin: “Or… you could swear loyalty to me and grant me powers unimaginable? It’s a win-win, you get to live, we get to live, you get free… kind of? I get to be super awesome with magic.”
Silence. The fire within the dome wraps in on itself and turns into a dagger. Martin reaches in and grabs it. With a sudden burst of power, Martin glows with demonic energy for a second and then it recedes. The time stop breaks and the power that was held within began to course through the core. With the main conduit removed the power seems to have released. Ereden hitting a few more switched opens up a doorway. MED rush through discovering two platforms, which are identified as teleportation runes. Not wanting to die they all pile onto the first one and vanish.
Darkness. MED finds themselves in a cozy looking Inn. Standing next to a table of what looks like Ocrait members. On each of their foreheads, the magic symbol of necromancy is carved. The Barkeep walked over looking a bit confused but not too surprised at your sudden appearance, he also seemed to be an Ocrait. He asked for an explanation. And this is when Hilda our oath-bound good tell the truth all the time Paladin let this random guy know everything. He lets us know that they are part of the banished faction of Ocrait. They still reside on the old continent and we should not worry about being displaced in time. He tells us his name is Veradon and that he is oh so thrilled to hear that Justinius has been killed and even more thrilled to hear that the magic circle we had would lead him and his fellows right back to the destroyed Ocrait Magisterium. After some talking amongst ourselves, we agree to go back with him through the teleportation circle, against our better judgment.
MED appears in the same room they left. The city seems close to exploding. We managed to escape but only barely. Looking around we noticed Veradon was nowhere to be found. As the city explodes, the refugees evacuate their camp and head closer to Bastion. A large explosion launches a huge earth elemental free, seeming to be enraged it charged the party. Hilda taking in divine energy completely destroyed the creature in a single critical hit! WOW! Behind us a blast of magical energy arcs into the sky! The center of the city collapses in on itself and then with one final explosion ruins the area that was once the Core.
We report everything to Lady Erochnein, she lets us know to not spread this information to anyone. The king even has no reason to know until the time is right. She hands us money and we agree.
End of Game Seventeen.
Thoughts on the Game: It was the follow up to the masquerade and it was still a hell of a lot of fun. New quests have already been hooked and more mysteries have developed. Who are Veradon and his faction of Necrocrait? Why were they cast out of the O.M.? WHAT HAS MARTIN DONE MAKING DEALS WITH DEMONS?! Gareth is an excellent storyteller and we are damn lucky to get such a good replacement for Justin. Multiplying Electrifying Direbears continues to grow in strength if not in confusion as well.
As always I shall explain the game! Vigilante is a group cooperative world gaming experience. A combination of several D&D groups, all established as different guilds, are all active in the world influencing the events of the town of Bastion and surrounding area. The guilds allow everyone to exchange items and it also allows players to switch parties to pursue different quests and be part of events. The story continues to progress in cool and inventive ways and I am so grateful to the collaborative Dungeon Masters for putting it all together, but there are still a ton of things to do and uncover and I look forward to more interesting and exciting adventures. I know I haven’t been posting my weekly games weekly, but I will have all of them typed up soon. I’ll keep posting updates of my weekly games going forward! Hopefully!
