Vigilante Game Sixteen: Crashin' the Party
Lieche and Ereden successfully revived Martin and Ulutrek. Looking a little worse for wear the party made camp to rest one last time before heading back to Bastion. Discussing amongst each other MED decided to reach out to Lady Erochnine as soon as they arrived in Bastion. Breaking camp, we gathered our supplies, placing most of it inside of Lieche’s bag of holding. We distributed flying brooms and the remaining two Pegasi, Leeroy Jenkins and Garyl, and started the long flight back to Bastion. In the distance we could still see the great city of the Ocrait Magisterium, thinking of our not so fond memories of the place, we couldn’t wait to get away from it.
Even in the air, we could tell the ground was beginning to shake. A large cracking noise ripped through the air. Ereden pointed back towards the Ocrait Magisterium, halting our advance towards Bastion. A giant orb had erupted around the Ocrait city and it was slowly rising out of the ground… (Out of character my brother and I started laughing because a wizard city in the air is clearly Dalaran, lol.) Our haste to get back to Bastion was now overly justified. We had to reach the city before the O.M. or who knows what could happen. Bryce, who was still with MED even though I fail to mention him all the time. Suddenly received a package via magic. Inside was a ring, a necklace and some other pieces of jewelry. They were his father's... And if they had come to him that could only mean that his father was now dead. He had failed in his attempt to convince the other members of the Ocrait to stop their plans to destroy Bastion. Bryce encouraged MED that he would speak to Erochnine on behalf of the O.M. and his father. He was now the leader of a faction of the O.M. and would not have all of his people at fault for what was to happen.
After several hours of travel, we arrived ahead of the floating city in Bastion. We landed at the adventurers guild to resupply and get dressed for the masquerade. We met up with a Gnome called Fambin, who outfitted us with all the essentials. From there we headed to the Ruby Palace, passing townsfolk celebrating outdoors, music, lights, dancing, the whole shebang. The Masquerade was in full swing across the city. We entered the Ruby Palace, guards nodding to us as we passed. We found Lady Erochnine entertaining a group of smaller nobility. Martin walked up in his usual fashion and demanded to speak to her. The conversation died immediately as the lesser nobles gaped at Martin and Erochnine glared. Erochnine excused the lesser nobles and took us aside, she didn’t seem to believe we were standing in front of her. MED let her know that the mission was over, no one was trying to assassinate her. Everything since her assassination attempt and maybe even before that had been orchestrated by Justinius. She started asking more questions, but Bryce interrupted. There was no time to discuss formalities, the O.M. were on their way that very instant. MED then explained the flying city and the danger it was to Bastion.
MED readied for the assault on the O.M. city, we would lead the first assault and try and bring the city down. Bryce gave June a red ruby from his father’s jewelry, letting her know that when we break it near the shield it should open enough to let us inside. Martin turned to Erochnein, “Listen if we win you’ll give me your hat.” She blinked at Martin and nodded. We mounted up, riding brooms and Pegasus, and launched into the sky towards the advancing city.
We arrived just as the city began firing spells at Bastion. They clearly saw us coming as we began avoiding fireball after fireball launched at us. June reaching the outer wall of the shield cracked the ruby and an opening large enough for the group to move through appeared. The spells that followed this cause the party to split. June, Uluthrek, Hilda, Bertok, and Leiche crashed into the side of the city entering an underground area. Martin, Bryce, Ereden, and Edna veered up above the city trying to find the control tower. Bryce noted a large structure where light poured from that seemed to be the main source for the shield and possibly the controls for the city itself.
I break these next parts into two sections because the party was separated. Martin, Bryce, Ereden, and Edna in group one and June, Uluthrek, Hilda, Bertok and Leiche in group two.
Group One: Martin directed Leeroy Jenkins towards the center building. In front of us, the houses suddenly explode, exposing an earth, air, fire and water elemental. Martin dropped from Leeroy directly onto the air elemental destroying it completely with his magical quarterstaff once glaive… Ereden and Edna then caused the other elementals to become confused and instead of fighting them we continued to head towards the central building. As we approached we saw a group of Mage Killers all surrounding a large orb radiating with energy. We had found the power source…. So naturally we wanted to destroy it. Surprised by us being there at all, the Mage Killers were too slow in reacting. Ereden let loose an empowered shatter on the orb cracking it, just as Martin who had just magically received aid from Bardarittaville fell on top of it with an empowered thunderclap. The orb shattered and with a lurch, the city began to fall as the shield disintegrated.
“Huh, Bardarittaville just saved us.”
Group Two: June and the others landed and soon discovered a room where three rings resided. It was clearly a puzzle but we said “fuck it” so June started putting on rings. The different ring combinations did different things that affected the city. June was able to either cause healing or harm to different parts of the city, as well as, events happening in Bastion. These effects varied depending on the rings June wore. June discovered with one of the combinations she could impact the Ocrait city, with another Justinius and with a third the golden defenders of Bastion. It took a lot of figuring out, some results were bad such as the destruction of all of the Golden Defenders of Bastion. Others were good, all of the floating city regained a large portion of their health, that included us since we were in the city. The last combination transported June to where the real Justinius was. As she appeared near him she saw the fellow adventuring guild OCD slaying Justinius. She used the ring again and appeared right as the city began to fall.
Bryce pointed at an outside platform floating around the falling city and yelled for us to head to it. By some luck, we should be able to slow the descent of the city from there. Below us, we saw Ocrait members grabbing belongings, family members, etc and blinking out of the city. Spotting June and the others we flew passed and yelled for them to follow. We reached the outlying platform, where we found a small group of Mage Killers attempting to correct the shield. We knocked them out and Bryce set to work at slowing the fall of the city. It began to work as a group of Mage Killers materialized in front of us. They pulled out their wonky looking magic daggers and engaged us in combat. June leaped forward as the one who seemed to be in charge raised his hand and she winked out of existence, banished. Matin and Hilda connected blows with the two other Mage Killers, slowly being beaten back. June rematerialized and smashed into the boss man. Martin, successfully cutting down his foe joined June in fighting the Boss. He stabbed Martin draining some of his life away. June made contact with his skull and Martin seized the opportunity to cut him down. Catching the Mage Killer’s daggers and tossing one to June.
June: “You dirty kill stealer. But hey, I killed all of Bastion’s Golems so that is like 80 kills for me.”
Martin: “I feel like killing things on our side doesn’t count in this competition of ours.”
The city smashed into the ground and the party fell to the floor of the platform. The city continued to slide, smashing its way through trees, hills, etc until finally coming to a stop. The fight was over, but the destruction of the city was vast. We rushed to the aid of people still trapped inside as the city continued to burn around us. After several hours of search and rescue, we managed to save everyone we could. Near the refugee point we were greeted by Lady Erochnein and a large group of Drow soldiers. She would be taking the refugees into custody, that included Bryce. Martin demanded that MED is compensated for saving her sorry noble ass. She sighed and an agreement was made for a magic item from her vault be given to each member. Martin held out his hand, “I’ll also be taking her ladyship's hat.” June and the rest of MED stood up for Bryce, claiming that without him we wouldn’t have been able to stop the city. He deserves as much credit as MED. Erochnein agreed that she would take this into consideration once thorough interviews had taken place.
End of game Sixteen.
Thoughts on the game: Holy crap, that was a rollercoaster of an event. Tonight was the second full party influencing party event, The Masquerade. It took place on Halloween so we were all dressed up as our characters. But anyway, this was an exciting game. Every single game up to this point has lead to this. Justinius has been killed, we stopped him from claiming the power within the seven world towers. We broke the Ocrait, or at least to our knowledge they have fallen. And hell, we even got awesome loot.
As always I shall explain the game! Vigilante is a group cooperative world gaming experience. A combination of several D&D groups, all established as different guilds, are all active in the world influencing the events of the town of Bastion and surrounding area. The guilds allow everyone to exchange items and it also allows players to switch parties to pursue different quests and be part of events. The story continues to progress in cool and inventive ways and I am so grateful to the collaborative Dungeon Masters for putting it all together, but there are still a ton of things to do and uncover and I look forward to more interesting and exciting adventures. I know I haven’t been posting my weekly games weekly, but I will have all of them typed up soon. I’ll keep posting updates of my weekly games going forward! Hopefully!
